HERNDON, Va., Feb 03, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Washington Gas Energy Services, Inc. (WGES), a leading competitive supplier of electricity and natural gas to business and residential customers in the mid-Atlantic region, announced today that more than 10,000 WGES residential customers from Maryland, the District of Columbia, and Delaware have made the switch to clean wind power. These customers are helping to reduce CO2 emissions by purchasing 50% or 100% CleanSteps(SM) WindPower from local wind farms to meet their electricity needs.
"As a Clean Energy Week partner (www.cleanenergyweek.com), we thank our customers for their commitment to improve the environment all year long," said Harry Warren, President of WGES. "During 2009 our CleanSteps(SM) WindPower customers helped eliminate 102,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions, equivalent to taking 19,500 fossil fueled cars off the road."
In addition to the 10,000 customers who purchase 50% or 100% CleanSteps(SM) WindPower, all other WGES residential electric customers receive 5% wind power as part of their electricity supply, above and beyond any jurisdictional requirements for renewable energy content. WGES began offering power from regional wind farms in 2002.
